On March 31, 1948, the U.S. Congress approved the Marshall Plan, a visionary initiative designed by Secretary of State George C. Marshall. Officially known as the European Recovery Program, this plan was not only aimed at rebuilding post-war Europe but also served as a strategic buffer against the expansion of Stalin’s USSR.
From economic miracle to modern inspiration
The Marshall Plan played a pivotal role in the reconstruction of Europe by providing essential financial aid, goods, resources, and even food supplies. Some of this assistance was structured as loans, while a significant portion was offered as outright gifts. Among the beneficiaries of this recovery effort was (Western) Germany, which, thanks to the support, experienced rapid economic growth—what later became known as the Wirtschaftswunder (economic miracle).
